Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and New Mexico Common Core Standards (NMCCSS)

Why CCSS? Individual states have had their own “standards” and there has been little consistency from one state to another.

CCSS provides a single set of research-based expectations on what students should be learning and what skills they should be mastering in English/language-arts and mathematics at each grade level (K-12)

CCSS provides additional standards for content/reading in history/social studies, science, and technical subjects for grades 6-12.

CCSS were developed by educators and experts coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices, and the Council of Chief State School Officers.

The federal government will NOT oversee implementation of CCSS. The U.S. Constitution gives individual states the right to oversee education. New Mexico will be in charge of testing to monitor student progress.

CCSS are not currently aligned to English Language Proficiency standards.

The New Mexico Common Core State Standards Implementation Plan

This 4-year phase-in plan addresses implementation timelines for Communication, Student Assessment, Curriculum & Instruction / Instructional Materials, Professional Development, and Internal Leadership.

Teachers began using NMCCSS concepts, curriculum and practices in the 2011-2012 school year. Teachers will continue expanding use of NMCCSS concepts, curriculum, materials and practices to an expected full implementation in the 2014-2015 school year. You can view the detailed transition timeline by clicking here. 

The New Mexico Public Education Department’s guiding principles for the Common Core State Standards are to:

 • Prepare students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in education and training after high school.

 • Ensure students are globally competitive by exposing them to educational standards that are used throughout the world.

 • Improve equity and economic opportunity for all students by having consistent expectations for achievement for all students.

 • Clarify so that parents, teachers and students understand what is expected of them.

 • Collaborate across districts and with other states so that there is sharing of resources and expertise in the development of new classroom materials, curriculum, teacher professional development and student exams based on best practices.
